A header panel is the moulded plastic or composite structure that carries the grille, the headlight buckets and the hood latch across the front of the vehicle. Hoods, grilles, header panels and the brackets behind them, in steel or aluminum, in stock for the vehicles that actually drive here. Counter prices for every variant are in the table below, next to what a dealer parts department charges for the same thing.

- hood hinges and struts
- hood latch supports

- hood release cables
Terms you will hear at this counter and on the phone: CAPA, hood striker, hood latch support, e-coat primer, Certified Automotive Parts Association. If any of that is unfamiliar, ask, because getting the vocabulary right is half of ordering the correct part.
Six things worth knowing before you order
- Hoods are the one panel where a bad aftermarket part is genuinely dangerous. CAPA found one of six non-certified hoods it tested was missing the reinforcement plate between the striker and the outer skin entirely.
- We put a light behind the striker area on every hood that comes in. If the reinforcement plate is not there, the hood goes back on the truck.
- Aluminum hoods weigh roughly half what the steel equivalent does, which matters because the factory gas struts were valved for the original weight.
- Header panels crack at the headlight tabs long before anything else fails, and most of the ones we sell go to people replacing a tab, not a whole front end.
- Grille chrome is plated plastic, not metal, so a heat gun and a plastic pry tool get the clips loose without turning the surround into confetti.
- Hood insulation pads are cheap and everybody skips them, and then the paint on the underside cooks and the engine bay sounds twice as loud.
- Hood struts are matched to the panel weight, and fitting a new hood without new struts is how a hood ends up resting on somebody's head.
- Grille surrounds with chrome plating and grille surrounds with painted trim are different part numbers on the same vehicle, and photographs online rarely make it clear which is which.
- The hood latch support is a separate stamping on most vehicles and it takes the whole load when a bonnet is forced. Check it before blaming the latch.
- Radiator core supports come in steel, composite and hybrid depending on the model year, and the mounting points move between versions.
- Active grille shutters are fitted to a lot of recent vehicles for aerodynamics, and they are a motorised assembly that has to move across to the new grille.
- Hood hinges bend before hoods do in a low-speed frontal impact, and a bent hinge is a twenty dollar part that saves a two hundred dollar panel from being blamed.

Are aftermarket hoods safe?
A CAPA certified hood is tested for the reinforcement plate, striker strength and material match, while CAPA's own testing of non-certified parts found one of six hoods missing the critical reinforcement plate between the hood striker and the outer skin.
What is a header panel and do I need one?
A header panel is the moulded front structure carrying the grille, headlight buckets and hood latch, and it needs replacing when the headlight mounting tabs snap or the latch mount is torn.
Should I buy a steel or aluminum hood?
Buy whichever the vehicle came with. An aluminum hood on a car specified for steel will float on the original gas struts, and a steel hood on an aluminum-hood vehicle adds weight the hinges were never valved for.
Before an adjuster tells you otherwise
Texas Insurance Code Section 1952.301 prohibits an insurer from limiting your coverage by specifying the brand, type, kind, age, vendor, supplier or condition of the parts used to repair your vehicle, and Section 1952.302 prohibits an adjuster from telling you that you must use a shop from a preferred list. The statute is public and it is short. Read the whole subchapter here, or read the section numbers back to whoever is on the phone. Working on the same corner of the car? Hoods, Grilles & Header Panels questions we get asked
Why does my new hood sit high at the back corners?
A hood sitting high at the rear corners is almost always hinge damage rather than a bad panel, because the hinge takes the load when the hood is forced open in a collision.
How much is a replacement hood in Dallas?
An unpainted aftermarket steel hood for a common Dallas sedan runs $118 to $230 at our counter, against $430 to $980 for the dealer part.
Can I paint a hood myself?
You can, and plenty of our customers do, but a hood is the largest flat panel on the car and every ripple in the primer shows in direct Texas sun.
