Six things worth knowing before you order

• Clean it first. A carboned throttle plate causes the same hunting idle as a failed unit and a can of cleaner costs a fraction of the part.
• Drive-by-wire throttle bodies almost always need an idle relearn after fitting, and skipping it is why a new unit sometimes idles worse than the old one.
• Remanufactured units get a new motor, new bushings and a new seal, and they are the sensible buy on anything past about eight years old.
• The gasket is usually a reusable rubber ring, not paper, and reusing a flattened one is a vacuum leak you will chase for a week.
• Half the throttle body codes we see across the counter turn out to be a dirty mass airflow sensor upstream, so read the actual code before ordering anything.
• Aerosol throttle cleaner and carburettor cleaner are not the same product, and carburettor cleaner will strip the coating off a modern throttle bore.
• Intake manifold gaskets on plastic manifolds warp with heat cycling, and a vacuum leak there produces every symptom people blame on the throttle body.
• A PCV valve costs less than a coffee and a blocked one raises crankcase pressure enough to push oil past seals that were perfectly fine.
• Mass airflow sensor elements are cleaned with a dedicated cleaner and nothing else, because brake cleaner strips the coating off the hot wire.
• Electronic throttle bodies have a limp-home spring that holds the plate slightly open, and mistaking that gap for a fault sends people down the wrong path.
• Connector pins back out of engine bay plugs after a decade of heat cycles, and a pin sitting half a millimetre proud reads as a failed sensor.
• Some throttle bodies must be initialised with a scan tool rather than by an ignition-cycle procedure, and which is which is model specific.
